Saturday 16th March JULIAN WEBSDALE  gave a presentation on an Outline of Modern Witchcraft. This was the story of how Gerald Gardner brought Wicca to the attention of the world as a vehicle for White Magic. From his initiates many other Traditions of Wicca have arisen but all stem from Gardner's initiation by the New Forest Coven in the 1950's, which he believed was the oldest Pre-Christian Coven still existing in Europe at the time. Wicca may be about Healing or Nature Magic but its influence dates from the Initiates and followers of Gardner.

June 22nd Dr Mike Rutter Dionysus and Rebirth

Dionysus (a.k.a. Bacchus) was the Classical Greek (later also Roman) deity of wine, music, theatre, intoxication, and religious ecstasy. Dionysiac or Bacchic revelry has become a byword for wild parties and uninhibited living, but he was also regarded as a god of rebirth and spiritual ascent. Orphic and Bacchic mysteries promising initiates individual immortality and release from the wheel of rebirth are described by Herodotus as deriving from Egypt, and the Greek deities Persephone and Dionysus are often seen as comparable to Isis and Osiris. While the myths are varied and contradictory, they contain themes of special interest to Theosophically minded searchers, for whom the wine of enlightenment is sought. There are also the gold foil funerary stones associated with the religion that promise 'eternal' life to the followers of the Bacchic mysteries. "I am a son of Earth and starry sky. I am parched with thirst and am dying; but quickly grant me cold water from the Lake of Memory to drink".
